Harlow was planned and built in the years after the second
world war. The masterplan provided the framework for a
number of neighbourhoods both separated and linked by areas
of green space. The countryside was integrated into the town
as an amenity for the people living there. Each neighbourhood
is designed to be self-sufficient with shops, schools, and
community spaces within walking distance. Harlow's town
centre follows the same principles, with public buildings,
shopping malls and parkland in close proximity.
